Hundreds In March On Kzn Student Health Insurance Quote
About 500 residents of T section in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, demanded yesterday that Durban’s Mangosuthu University of Technology end the suspension of 16 of its students.
The students, nine of whom were members of the students’ representative council , were suspended for instigating and participating in an illegal protest at the student health insurance quote in March .
Students armed with knobkerries joined the residents’ march.
They called for the criminal charges against the 125 students arrested during the protest to be dropped and for the resignation of the student health insurance quote’s chancellor, Professor Aaron Ndlovu.
Police spokesman Captain Khephu Ndlovu said the students and residents handed a memorandum to a representative of the student health insurance quote’s management.
“It was very peaceful and, once the memorandum was received, the [members of the community] went back to their homes. ”
A hearing will be held on May 15 to resolve the matter.
